Review

Arriving at our desk, unannounced and unheralded, this book, with its imposing artful cover, shouts with its direct eye, "open me." And that I did to page 88 where I saw "Angelo and Mad, New York, 2002". It's a portrait of two young men getting dressed, one with his pants still down and this poem:

Their Beginning

The fulfillment of their illicit passion

was complete. Getting up from the mattress,

they hastily dress without saying a word.

They leave the house separately, secretly; and

walk rather nervously down the street, as if

they suspect that something about them betrays

the kind of bed they shared just now.

Yet how the artist's life has gained

Tomorrow, the day after, or years later he'll compose

the powerful verses that had their beginning here.

Blending photographs of the famous, Gore Vidal, with the beautiful, John (with no last name) and gorgeous poetry, Shades of Love is definitely a last minute addition for one of our favorite books of 2010.
