Originally called Great Moments in Aviation, the equally misnamed Shades of Fear isn't some third-rate, quick-paycheck hack job mystery which the advertising suggests. It's an unusual, rewarding drama revolving around a handful of passengers on a cruise to England, and of their respective secrets. Well-written by Jeanette Winterson (Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit) and directed with just the right amount of sensitivity and humor by Kidron, Shades of Fear also boasts a stellar cast of British stalwarts and a radiant newcomer, Ayola (who is really the lead character). Although slight, this is a perfect film for a nice, quiet evening at home, with a wonderful, revelatory scene between Redgrave, Tutin and Pryce cuttin' the rug to "Brazil." The missionaries played Vanessa Redgrave and Dorothy Tutin discover that they are more than just best friends by the end of the film.
