Take a journey to a wilder time in this lively and revealing documentary about the gay sex revolution of the '70s. After the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969 but before AIDS hit in 1981, New York City was a sexual paradise for gay men. For a night of dancing there was the Saint, where men retired to the balcony for sex. They took MDMA (now called Ecstasy) and danced the whole night through. If you were in the mood for pure sex, there were the bathhouses, the Saint Marks Baths being the most successful of such businesses. There was a two-level orgy room, floors of small rooms for sex, a wild steam room, a pool and a large jacuzzi. One of the bathhouses, Man's Country, even had a truck on their top floor. And if total sleaze was your aim, there were the Piers, the Anvil or Mineshaft, places where men simply went to have sex with other men with no pretense.

Piecing together interviews with men who played around in that era with stills and actual footage, documentary filmmaker Joseph F. Lovett has painted a nostalgic and highly erotic portrait of a lost time of "innocence." Gay Sex in the 70s is a truly lively non-fiction film that is sure to provoke discussion.

Wonderful depiction

I found Gay Sex in the 70s an excellent depiction of homosexuality in the 70s. Even if it didn't encompass every homosexual person in the 70s it's storytelling really allows the viewer to see into the world that not many got to experience. It's a fun film that many could enjoy as well as learn about New York in a way that not many have seen.

This film is a DECENT FILM. It is a true documentary, so for those seeking tons of videoclips of bath houses and backrooms... look elsewhere. I think a viewer of this film gets an interesting picture of the often talked about heyday of New York gay life.

A narrow view of gay life

I saw this film in the fall of 2005 at a local Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

I considered it well made and interesting. It does a good job of documenting a specific portion of gay society in the 70s.

However, the film would have us believe that what is portrayed was true of all gays in this time frame.

Although I was not "out" at the time I can not believe that the extremely promiscuous life styles portrayed in this movie were true of all gays who were out in the 1970s. Just as what is shown in the closing scenes is not a full portrait of the gay youth and society of today! I'm refering to footage from recent NY Gay Pride Parades, mostly of the GayCollegeParty group (the night club promotions Heaven and Detention in NYC).
