Synopsis

A gay man who loves kids becomes an unwitting target of an overanxious housewife in an impressive, provocative and very funny filmmaking debut from "Queer as Folk" star Peter Paige (Emmett on "QAF").

Review

When Peter Paige starred as Emmett on "Queer as Folk" we certainly didn't expect that the nelly queen would go on to write, star and direct a feature film immediately after the fifth season ended. Not only didn't Mr. Paige take a rest after 5 grueling years of the hit TV show, he ain't no nelly queen either. Mr. Paige loves a challenge! For his directorial and screenwriting debut, Paige has created something new and totally unexpected – a comedy about community mass hysteria. Peter plays Paul, an innocent, possibly damaged, gay man whose favorite pastime is playing with his toddler godson. When the boy's family moves away, he plunges into a dark depression. To snap out of it, he jumps at any chance to be with kids. Paul hangs out at the neighborhood playground, he gets a job at a toy store, and puts together a flyer advertising himself as a "manny." In today's world he's putting out the wrong signals. One mother (an impressive Kathy Najimy) launches a ludicrous homemade crusade against this "park-lurking pedophile". Everything comes to a head when Paul approaches a crowd to hand out his flyers, only to discover it's a rally against him.

What makes this first-time effort so captivating is Paige's deft balancing act between somberness and silliness - he calls the film "one part controversial, three parts joyful." You're never quite sure what to think of his characters: Paul is completely lovable, but he's definitely off; and it's easy to mock the mother, but she does care about her kids. Bringing up serious issues and dealing with them through comedy and melodrama is not new to this "Queer as Folk" veteran, but this film feels fresh and new.

A poignant view

I am not a film critic or qualified to be one, but I liked the movie and thought Paige introduced a dose of reality that a lot of people (straights) still associate gays with pedophilia. However, in today's world you would think Paige's character would have more sense, which leads me to have questions about his mental level of awareness. In one scene where he escorts a young female child into the restroom, he goes in with her! Uuuh, how about looking for the parent(s)? Or SHOW the little girl to the restroom? Don't go in with her! Either Paige's character lacks common sense or he has some kind of mental disability in which he is not cognizant of what his actions seem like to others. The movie really didn't address this issue or other issues such as Paul's childhood, upbringing, family, etc as to why he is the way he is. A lot of unanswered questions about Paul.

Needs another workshop.

Guys, this played the 2006 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. High expectations, coming for Peter's success with QAF. Sadly, it needed more workshopping before filming began. I can't imagine that an adult, unless mentally handicapped, could be so naive, and that others around Peter's characters, allowed his behaviour to continue. Kath Najimy's role had merit, but VERY quickly became excessive, and I found it had to understand for the direction she headed and the end result she created within the story, she could walk away scott free. Watch it, the production quality is good, but sadly the story needs a lot of fine tuning, it could have been so much better. I will not be buying a copy for my collection.

Great first film by Peter Paige!

I saw this in a screening attending by Peter himself in Portland, where the movie is set, and really liked it! He does comment that you are to question where Paul is coming from, and that we can see ourselves in both Paul and the Maggie character. I thought it was an excellent "dark" comedy that brought up real issues. I empathized with Paul, and towards the end, also with Maggie. I'm sorry that others were disturbed by it. I recommend people watch it and judge for themselves how they feel about it.

  Agree completely

Watched this with friends and this film made us feel so uncomfortable that we turned the thing off and couldn't finish watching it. Unlike other reviewers we didnt even find the story interesting. Struck me that the characters needed psychological help fromt he outset! Sorry - ONE STAR - M A X !!!!

  Agree with letsplow

Mr. Paige’s character was grating...you almost wished he'd get 20 years, that is how unsympathetic I felt. Although I understand that his role demanded he would be more like a child himself, it was like watching Bobcat Goldwaith on acid. The story was pretty interesting.
