Richard Stevenson
Having created Donald Strachey, one of the most beloved characters in gay fiction, Richard Stevenson (born Richard Lipez) has made a huge mark on the world of gay literature. In 1961 Stevenson received his BS in English from Lock Haven State College and went on to study American Literature at Penn State.
During the 60s Stevenson, as a Green Peace volunteer, taught English to ninth graders in Ethiopia. He also served as Executive Director of The Action for Opportunity an anti-poverty agency late in the 60s and 70s.
He co-authored his first novel, Grand Scam, in 1979. Since then Stevenson has focused on journalism and the Donald Strachey mystery series. So far, three books in the Strachey series have been made into hit films by Here!.
Stevenson was married for 20 years and has two grown children. In 1990, after he came out as gay, he met his life partner, sculptor Joe Wheaton. The two currently live in a converted barn.
