Synopsis

The vampire Lestat returns to the screen in this latest Anne Rice adaptation. Lestat does battle with the evil vampire queen Akasha (the late Aaliyah) in her quest to destroy humankind. Vampire fun for blood-lovers everywhere!

Review

Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles has been given a high camp and fleshy treatment in this new vampire film, Queen of the Damned. Roundly trashed by the critics who don't understand the camp in Mommie Dearest, this one is perfect for a few laughs and a glimpse at some naughty alt sex and fleshiness. Irish actor Stuart Townsend stars as "The Vampire Lestat" who awakens from a long sleep to a world of goth rock-n-roll he yearns to be part of. Lestat chooses a band and proclaims himself to the world as the first "openly" vampire singer! (sort of like an Elton John for the blood-suckers) There's a ridiculous young vampire student Jesse Reeves (Moreau) who goes on the hunt for Lestat at a well-known vampire club. She hangs with the people of the night hoping to meet the new rock star, but is instead taunted by some ghouls - what a surprise! She does draw Lestat's attention whose mortal shreds are revealed as he "falls in love" with her. Becoming more camp in every scene, Lestat also draws the attention of the ultra-powerful, ancient vampire Akasha (the late Aaliyah) who wants to destroy the world with Lestat as her king.

Great rock-n-roll score - some terrific MTV quick editing scenes (but not enough) - flashy costumes and lots of blood on vampire lips make for a pleasant night for vampire and horror film lovers.
