Jared Thomas has lived his whole life in the small mountain town of Coda, Colorado. He can't imagine living anywhere else. Unfortunately, the only other gay man in town is twice his age and used to be his teacher, so Jared is resigned to spending his life alone...
Until Matt Richards walks into his life, that is. Matt has just been hired by the Coda Police Department, and he and Jared immediately become friends. Matt claims he is straight, but for Jared, having a sexy friend like Matt is way too tempting. Facing Matt’s affair with a local woman, his disapproving family, and harassment from Matt’s co-workers, Jared fears they'll never find a way to be together—if he can even convince Matt to try.
Coda, Colorado is the setting of Promises and it is the place where Jared Thomas has spent his entire life. Even though it is a small town, he cannot imagine living anywhere else but there is one problem and that is that Jared is gay and there is only one other gay man in town. Jared feels he must live a lonely life. However we know that something will happen and it does when Matt Richards comes to town. Matt got a job with the local police department and he and Jared become fast friends right away. Matt feels that he is straight but Jared feels differently and thinks that Matt is just much too sexy to be straight.
It seems that Matt is in the closet because he is afraid of his homophobic father and Jared is afraid to be out in his hometown. Matt refuses to accept Jared at first but he is also not ready to lose his friendship. The two men grow together and Sexton gives us two wonderful characters in Jared and Matt. This is a story about coming-out, taking risks and falling in love and the best word that I can use to describe it is to say that it is charming. The plot is intelligent and the characters are well fleshed out. It is nice to see two men become friends before they become lovers and it is great to have a book that is so believable. Sexton shows us how a relationship based upon honesty can grow and develop. The plot evolves slowly and quietly and the love the men share is not based just on sex but on friendship as well.
