Actress Carrie Fisher's first attempt at screenwriting is this breezy comedy based on her true-life battle with alchohol and drug abuse. Streep and MacLaine are fabulously funny as the struggling Hollywood daughter and her aging celebrity mom. Fisher's screenplay deftly confronts the serious side of substance abuse while not straying from her comedic intent. Some of the dialogue burns like acid.

Openly gay actor Simon Callow has a small but juicy role where he is overheard telling the wardrobe mistress what's wrong with the drug free Streep. When Shirley MacLaine's character is approached in the hospital hallway by two gay men she exclaims "You know how the queens love me."
