Out Late is an inspirational and moving documentary about five individuals who made the courageous and life–altering decision to come out as lesbian, gay, or transgender, after the age of 55.
Why did they wait until their 50s, 60s, or 70s to come out? And what was the turning point that caused each of them to openly declare their sexuality? From Canada to Florida to Kansas, we explore what ultimately led these dynamic individuals to make the liberating choice to live openly and honestly amongst their family, friends and community, perhaps for the first time in their lives.

There was a time when people just did not come out for whatever reason. Then there were others who waited until they either felt that the time was right or has just discovered their sexuality late in life. Why some wait until they are in their 50’s or older to come out is the subject of this new documentary from Beatrice Alda and Jennifer Brooke. The film looks at people from all over and we hear from them what led them to wait to come out or to liberate themselves at a time when it really made no difference to anyone. The film concentrates on five people and what is so interesting is that each of them lived in a state of denial about their sexual orientation until late. Elaine came out at 79 and celebrates that. Walter stayed in the closet until he was 60 and totally regrets it. He came out at his church and found his partner when they both were quilting. Cathy lived in Kansas with her partner of 25 years and she felt the need to publicly come out in 2005 when her neighbors put a sign on her lawn supporting the ban on gay marriage. Leanna is a Navy man who has been married twice yet he transgendered when he was 60 after having suffered so much abuse because of his feminine ways. He is now living with a trans woman.
What a wonderful gift this film is especially because we see that all people have problems with coming out and age makes no differences.
