Synopsis

To the rock, tree, water, and cloud textures used by the great landscape photographers such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, Sherwin Carlquist has added the human male, photographed as a beautiful, uncut natural history object. The male nude outdoors inevitably connotes enjoyment, playfulness, sensuousness, and eroticism. In this series, there is an effort to depict textures and forms with even greater diversity and richness. Landscapes used in these photographs include some of the most striking in Southern Utah, Californian landscapes with equally intense textural features, and extensive use of weathered wood, leaf shadows, and foliage. The models are diverse yet complement the scenery in which they are photographed, connecting the strength of the male figure to the natural landscape.
