Meet Nate, a 19 year old male who becomes a friend of Margaret, 52. Everything is fine until Nate finds his first boyfriend and their friendship is shaken and tested. Nate is a film student and Margaret is an unmarried woman and they are best friends. Margaret decides that she wants a career as a stand-up comic and that’s fine. Then Darla, a classmate sets him up with James and they go one a date. This affects his relationship with Margaret.



Nate is the very cute Tyler Ross (“The Wise Kids”) and Natalie West is Margaret and they are perfect. This is a fresh and funny story. All is fine until cute Conor McCahill enters the picture and Margaret feels that her relationship with Nate is in jeopardy. Nate and Margaret have been very important to each other and she feels threatened. Of course, it is natural to wonder why Nate chooses to be with Margaret but we never know and the director, Nathan Adloff, says it does not matter. He shows us is that age does not matter as much as what people think and we must ask ourselves why society feels that friends must be from the same generation. In fact, the friendship between Margaret and Nate is really not that different from friendships between people of similar ages. It is sad that when Margaret’s career finally begins, the person that she wants to see her is Nate and he has just started dating James and forgets her. If Nate had heard the routine, he would have known exactly what to expect from his first relationship–pain and sorrow. Nate’s heart is promptly broken and he eventually understands that he really screwed things up with Margaret.

An interesting aspect of the film is that Nate’s sexuality is never discussed. He just begins dating a boy and there is nothing strange about it. All that is really important is that this is his first dating experience and his first broken heart. His sexuality is a non-issue, as it should be.

Quite simply, this is a nice and warm film about friendship that focuses on the characters—there are no big scenes. Margaret and Nate are just Margaret and Nate and while their relationship may surprise some people, it is real and important to them. It is friendship that matters; something that many have forgotten.
