Perennial boy-toy Ralph Macchio play the closeted gay best friend to the eminently beddable Eric Stoltz in this story of a young writer's rites of passage. Stoltz stars as a bohemian Jewish New York playwright who meets a WASPy photographer (Mary Louise Parker) while in college and proceeds to set up housekeeping. Billed as a romantic comedy, the gay subplot doesn't really amount to much although Macchio does come out and even plants a kiss on a startled Stoltz -- an act the sadly distances them. Kathleen Turner steals the movie with her exuberant portrait of a boozy, pot-smoking seductress/actress.
