Openly gay actor Rupert Everett plays a fine foil to Julia Roberts as her gay best friend in this hugely popular romantic comedy. Roberts, great in this screwball comedy role, is a woman who finds that she wants to marry her friendly ex-boyfriend (Mulroney) after he announces his intention to marry another. She then plots ways to sabotage their relationship, including using Everett as her fiancée. As her confidant, Everett gives a smashing performance and one only wishes he had more screen time. He's charming, sensuous, funny and even romantic, even though he's not the romantic lead. Mulroney, on the other hand, is undoubtedly handsome but lacks that spark that Everett is able to ignite.
