Audacious and energetic, Moulin Rouge moves at the speed of sound as it brings the movie musical into the twenty-first century with bursts of color, frenetic pacing and a way of looking at musical scoring that looks back to Steve Martin's brilliant Pennies from Heaven. Director Luhrmann, whose William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet was a great combination of sight and sound, tops himself visually as this story of the quest for "truth, beauty, freedom, but above all things, love," is often stunning to behold. Incorporating contemporary songs (from Madonna to The Police, Nirvana to T-Rex to The Sound of Music - it's a pastiche with a song for everyone) into a Paris at the turn of the century is a risky undertaking, but it works thanks to some fancy editing and an assault of the senses. Displaying a fine voice and matinee idol looks, McGregor plays a naïve writer who falls for the most beautiful courtesan (Kidman) at the Moulin Rouge. She would like to return his love, but she's promised to another. Thus begins this Orphean descent into heartbreak and tragedy. The story is thin - but who cares! The dizzying musical numbers (imagine Cabaret reinterpreted by Timothy Leary), lush costumes and sets, and nods to opera and Comédie-Française will make one forget about the film's few shortcomings and heady excesses. Like the can-can (to the re-made seventies hit Lady Marmalade) that the dancers perform in an opening number, Moulin Rouge revels in its own extravagance and gives us a hell of a show!

After studying American Musical Theater in college with Tom Lehrer, I thoroughly enjoyed Moulin Rouge!!! Nicole Kidman as the courtesan, and Ewan MacGregor as her lover, were both fantastic! Who knew these two could carry off the music so fantastically WELL!!!!!

If you haven't seen it yet, go out and rent it tonight! I promise, you'll really enjoy it. And no, I do not work for the producers, unfortunately.
