Staff review: Charlie (Edgerton) just inherited his father’s factory where the most ordinary, boring shoes have been made for years in the conservative town of Northampton. Unfortunately, Charlie also has inherited the factory’s outstanding debt and is forced to be the bad guy who must lay off all of the dedicated employees. When the charming Lauren (Potts) suggests “change the product” and not give up, Charlie conceives the notion that Lola (a highly entertaining Ejiofor) who grew up as Simon, could be a perfect blend of both client and entrepreneur if she and all of her drag queen friends would strut around and perform wearing the proposed “kinky boot collection”. With that in mind, the entire staff is forced to now create some of the most outrageous and fabulous footwear, soon to be displayed on the feet of the most entertaining drag queens throughout Europe. In the tradition of The Full Monty and Saving Grace, the formula behind Jarrold’s lighthearted comedy is a bit trite, yet there is enough good material here to make Charlie and his kinky shoe factory worth checking out. Especially entertaining are the musical sequences where the boots come to life on the vivacious performers who help emulate the feeling that you get when you go see a really great drag show. While you may not laugh out loud, you’ll certainly smile from cheek to cheek and find Kinky Boots has something for everyone whether you’re “a boy, a girl or yet to decide”.

Philadelphia Film Festival review: Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) inherits his father’s beloved shoe factory in conservative and dull Northampton, England. This is more of a curse than a blessing for Charlie, however: his girlfriend Melanie wants to leave Northampton for hip and exciting London. And the shoe factory, it turns out, is floundering financially – retail stores would currently rather stock cheap import footwear than Price’s more expensive, high-quality wares. Life looks grim for the shoe factory until Charlie visits London and encounters Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a no-nonsense drag queen desperate to find a pair of high heels that can support his weight. Inspiration follows, and so does Lola, who accompanies Charlie to Northampton to supervise the construction of the sexiest steel-heeled female footwear that man has ever worn. However, there are a few bumps on the road to the shoe line’s unveiling during Milan fashion week: Lola comes to heads with a bigoted, macho factory worker (Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost), while Charlie and Melanie endure serious challenges to their relationship. A delightful comedy inspired by a real-life story, Kinky Boots is anchored by a winning turn from rising star Ejiofor (Dirty Pretty Things), while director Julian Jarrold perfectly blends comedy, drama, humanity and a handful of colorful song-and-dance drag numbers. These boots were definitely made for walking…out of the theater with a big smile.

The movies have always been fascinated by drag. Think to yourself how much drag comes to the silver screen and you will find that it is a great deal more times than you considered. And here is yet another drag movie, “Kinky Boots” (Miramax). Based on a true story, this is a feel good comedy which is refreshing and fun.
The Price family has prided itself on making sensible and comfortable yet conservative shoes for men. As time passes this type of shoe is no longer the money maker it once was and young Charlie Price, in an attempt to save the company from bankruptcy, hires a new creative consultant who just happens to be a cross-dressing cabaret singer. The new creations that come out of the conservative shoe factory are outrageous and the wild designs bring a breath of a fresh air into a company on the verge of death. The moral the movie gives is that the best way to fit in is to stand out.
When young Charlie Price’s dad dies unexpectantly puts him in a position that he really doesn’t want. When he hires Lola to save the company they decide to change the face of the business by making men’s fetish footwear. The struggle to introduce unorthodox ideas while dealing with the prejudices of the staff and the public at large is the gist of the plot of the film.
Inspired by a true story, there are enough laughs here to make the sourest of people have a good guffaw. It is a cheeky, fun little movie with a big big message of tolerance. Chiwetel Ejiofor is brilliant as Lola/Simon, the drag queen and he is one to watch. It is his movie from start to finish and he wears it with love. The drag sequences are nothing short of hysterical and when you finish watching the movie you will be sporting an ear to ear grin. All of the actors are great, the script is tidy and the color photography is beautiful. As one of the new wave of British comedies, “Kinky Boots” holds its place with the best of them. Not only do you laugh but you think about the movie and some fundamental questions that are asked here include the issue of whether Lola is really gay or just a cross dresser and what is really the relationship between Charlie and Lola.
Just sit back, plop in the disc and before you know it you will be having a really good time.
