Review

Sometimes it's a pleasure to find a film that the distribution market just passes by for whatever reason. John Cruz's Jade Teardrop is one such film and we're excited to be offering it now. The film broaches the tender subject of gay adoptions and parenting and it offers no easy solutions to the tough problems.

Working out of his apartment, Spencer (Jeramie Gladman) earns his money as a hairstylist. He is also the adoptive father to a ten year-old boy, Noah (Noah Roman), who was Spencer's late partner's son. Noah hasn't taken well to the situation and speaks to no one and his pet caterpillar is his only friend. And Spencer would rather hang out with his new lover Jesse (Rik Baron) than spend quality time with his son. Feeling guilty about this problem, Spencer allows Noah’s Uncle Ollie (Reg Basco Hernandez) to be a part of the boy’s life in order to alleviate some of the parenting burden. As time moves on, Spencer eventually realizes how important Noah is to him and is ready to be a real father to the boy, but it might be too late. Noah wants to have a "normal" family with his uncle and his wife and be rid of a father he can no longer trust.

Without the technical expertise that a large budget could afford John Cruz's film tells its story well and it's a moving and entertaining story. We hope that you agree.

I just heard that TLA.com is releasing “Jade Teardrop” a part of their new DVD-R program by which some overlooked gay movies are released so that we can enjoy them. “Jade” is an indie about a young boy who refuse to speak to his gay adoptive father who really wants to have a father/son relationship with him. Noah (Noah Roman) won’t speak to anyone and his only friend is his caterpillar. Noah wants to be part of a normal family.
Spencer (Jeramie Gladman) is a hairstylist who works out of his home and Noah’s adopted father. Spencer got Noah who was his late partner’s son when his real father died and Noah does not like the situation. Spencer has a new lover, Jesse (Rik Baron) and he would rather be with him than with his son but he feels guilty about it and tries to fix the situation. Ollie, Noah’s uncle, is around and Spencer feels that this makes things easier or the boy but Spencer also sees how important Noah is to him and wants to be a real father to him but it seems to be too late. Noah doesn’t feel he can trust Spencer and wants to with his uncle and his wife. Because this is a small film, the emotion is high and the concentration is on the actors. Director John Cruz presents a very tender film about gay adoption and we see what a rough job parenting can be.
