Synopsis

"Happily Divorced" centers around Los Angeles florist Fran (Fran Drescher) as she deals with dating after finding out her realtor husband of 18 years (John Michael Higgins) is gay. Fran juggles her new relationships while still living under the same roof with her ex-husband. The cast is rounded out by Fran’s best friend Judi (Tichina Arnold), her parents Dori and Glen (Rita Moreno and Robert Walden) and her flower delivery employee Cesar (Valente Rodriguez).

Former husband and wife Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson created this show based around their real-life experience. Jacobson came out of the closet after 19 years of marriage - and was supported by Fran.
John Michael Higgins has a great track record playing gay characters. He's hysterically funny in Best in Show.
Happily Divorced isn't particularly deep, but it has a classic sitcom feel - packed with fast-paced one-liners.

Review

Though we haven't seen the entire first season of "Happily Divorced," we have seen enough to let you know that it's corny, contrived and a little too quick with the stereotypical gay humor. This show will probably appeal more to gay-friendly straight audiences than it will to well-informed gay crowds with discerning taste in television comedy. That being said, Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson - who co-created the show based on their real-life marriage (which ended when Jacobson came out of the closet) - have their hearts in the right place. Their interesting personal history and strong friendship inform the show in touching ways. And the always-welcome John Michael Higgins, likely cast due to his brilliantly funny improvised performance as a flamboyantly gay contestant in Best in Show, never ceases to elevate the formulaic, laugh-track-dependant material.
