Cassandra Reilly is a footloose Irish-American based in London and Seattle, who is currently in the midst of translating a magic realism novel about the search for a lost mother. When she gets an offer from Frankie, a San Francisco femme fatale to look for her husband in Barcelona, Cassandra can't resist. Cassandra takes off to stay with her old Barcelona friend Ana who wants to have a kid with her. She courts her fiery hairdresser Carmen and translates the novel - all while searching for Frankie's husband. Frankie's story quickly turns to quicksand as Cassandra finds out that nothing she has been told is true. We are given a marvelous tour of Gaudi's Barcelona and the gay underbelly as well. There are gay, lesbian and transgendered characters in this marvelous comic novel. A quick and wonderful read that skewers politically correct people of all stripes.

Recently made into a film directed by Susan Seidelman and starring Judy Davis, Lili Tayor and Juliette Lewis.
