Synopsis

A 22 year old gay filmmaker talks about his work and personal life with an unseen person behind the camera. Also included are four of his short films. "Hysterio Passio" which evokes images of men's passions. "Matricide," in which a lawyer asks a young gay man why he killed his mother. "Key in the Heart," in which an Asian man in drag hunts vampires. And in "Fall, 1990" college students meet their roommates. "Flow" begins with a satiric look at the vectors of viruses and ends with a chat with our fictional filmmaker's hip mother.

Review

Made by Hong Kong-born video artist Quentin Lee (Shopping for Fangs), this ambitious experimental film is composed of five post-modern stories -- each filmed as a different genre: expressionism, slasher flick, film noir, queer vampire movie and a college romance. The stories include a dense mock-documentary co-starring the filmmaker and his penis; an expressionist, queer vampire flick; a tale involving a knife-wielding drag queen; a dark story of a Christmas Day matricide; and a conventional college romance about a gay Asian-American student who falls in love with another student.

I just finished watching “Flow”, Quentin Lee’s (Drift) first film and it is quite an experience. It begins with three experimental shorts which are strikingly beautiful to watch which do not seem to say anything. The fourth segment, “Fall, 1990” is a more traditional narrative film with amazing performances. It begins with two Asian-American male students who become roommates at an American university. One is not only openly gay but militantly so and has an older Caucasian boyfriend. The other appears as a rabid heterosexual with a girlfriend. Things begin to happen when our gay guy meets a straight pal of his roommate’s girlfriend.
The first short, “Hysterio Passio” shows the passions of man while “Matricide”, the second short looks at a lawyer asking a young Chinese guy why he killed his mother on Christmas morning. In “Key to the Heart” the heroine is an Asian man in drag who pursues vampires. “Flow” closes with a chat about viruses. Tying the five shorts together is a 22 year old gay Chinese filmmaker who talks about his work and his love life with a friend who is unseen behind the camera.
It is not easy to describe “Flow” because it is so loaded and it is indeed representative of the new queer cinema but it is also a personal film. It is quite an ambitious undertaking and breaks boundaries both thematically and visually.
