The Angels of Light were more than a seminal performance troupe in the 1970s; growing out of the equally legendary Cockettes in San Francisco (led by the charismatic Hibiscus, and subject of the award-winning documentary The Cockettes), the Angels were a way of life, putting on trashy, fantastical fairy tales come to life in a city and an era that was in the blissful throes of early gay liberation.
Adrian Brooks was a pivotal member of the Angels; he was the author of most of their shows, and appeared in almost all of their productions during their heyday from late 1974 to 1980. In this vivid memoir, San Francisco in the 1970s comes to life as Brooks recounts the amazing stories of the Angels from behind closed doors, a book that is much about the politics of hippie experience in North America at the time. He also describes his early years as a Pennsylvania youth whose life is transformed by social and political activism: as a radical anti-war Quaker, as a volunteer for Martin Luther King, and later in New York's gallery scene, passing through Andy Warhol's circus before heading west, where the Angels made perfect, beautiful sense of the world.

A Way of Life

Adrian Brooks is a poet, a performer, a novelist and a playwright. When he lived in Philadelphia in the 60’s, he was active in the anti-war movement and fought for civil rights. In the 70’s in New York, he could be seen around Soho and hung around with members of Andy Warhol’s entourage and until 1980 he was in the vanguard of gay liberation and wrote for and starred in productions of a group called the Angels of Light. He now lives in San Francisco but he has taken the time and energy to give us his memoir
The Angels of Light was a performance group which grew out of the infamous Cockettes in San Francisco. But the Angels were more than just a group of performers, they were a way of life. The Angels were trashy and fantastic and they put on fabulous stage productions as they heralded in the early days of gay liberation.
Adrian Brooks was one who stood at the center of the group. He wrote most of the shows and he appeared in all of them. In his memoir he brings the San Francisco in which he lived to life as he tells stories about the Angels and we see how closely the Angels paralleled the Hippie movement. He was raised much differently than the way he turned out. He was born in 1947 in Philadelphia and was a Quaker anti-war and civil rights advocate but then he discovered California and the chance to be what he really wanted. He volunteered with Martin Luther King and was visible in the New York party and gallery scene, he was involved in Warhol’s Factory and then he moved to the west coast where he became involved with the Angels of Light.
The book has an introduction by Mark Thompson (author of “Gay Spirit”, “Gay Soul”. And “Gay Body”. It also contains many photographs by Daniel Nicoletta of which there are more than fifty in full-color.
The book is a beautiful look at what was once gay life and culture in America.
