”Different for Girls” is a new take on the odd couple that deals with transsexuality from a very heartwarming point of view. Paul Prentice has no idea that he is about to fall in love. While in a cab, he meets former classmate Karl Foyle who is now Kim Foyle having undergone gender reassignment surgery. Kim is a refined woman who composes verses for a greeting card company. Paul is the same as he always was, rough and tough but he begins to change as he and Kim become better friends. Kim must decide whether Paul is the man she has been searching for or someone she is better off not knowing,
Tony Marchant wrote this for the BBC and he looks at the transsexual issue with style and grace. While this is a comedy, there is also something to be learned here. We get a good look at the difference between sexuality and gender and that point is made when Paul tells Kim that he is straight and she answers that she is as well. Steven Mackintosh and Rupert Graves give excellent performances but the story is not just their own. There are several subplots---Kim's relationship with her sister and in turn her army Sergeant husband, there's equally no denying that it is the central bond between the Yin Yang fashioned protagonists that hooks the viewer. Knowing what people say that opposites attract the ending of the film cues as no surprise and everything considered, this is a feel-good film.
