Desert Hearts was trail-blazing in its positive depiction of a love affair between two intelligent and attractive women. An uptight English professor travels to Reno to get a divorce (the film is set in 1959), and there meets a sexy, free-spirited sculptress. Their attraction for each other and their budding love is played out in a realistic, romantic and all-together sensuous fashion. Helen Shaver and Patrice Charbonneau in the leads both give warm, expansive performances.

Straight Women Shouldn't Kiss

This movie is based on a book, Desert of the Heart, by Jane Rule. It takes place in Reno and surrounding areas where I grew up. The story is wonderful; the stretch from straight actress to lesbian character is just too much for this film. I only wish the actors could get past that, and see one another as they do in the book: compelling; wonderful; awestruck. All against the stark background of the high desert in 1950's Reno. Nice try, but next time get women who can look like they ENJOY touching one another.

I was a little bit nervous about buying this movie-as it is older than I am-but I am definately glad I did. I love this movie. I watch it all the time. I just wish I was as outgoing as Cay-I love her character. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good love story. I like this movie so much that I also bought the book...which I just received today. I can't wait to read it!
