Author, filmmaker and NYU film school graduate Ilan Duran Cohen's second feature, Confusion of Genders, is both explicit and restrained, sexy and sublime, gay and straight, its appeal and theme of a man's inability to grow up is unquestionable and broad. Pascal Greggory (an award winner for his performance in Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train) plays Alain, a fortyish lawyer who was once an ugly duckling. Now he's capable of charming anyone and, like a honeybee hovering over a garden of pretty flowers, can't decide which to sup from first, next, or last. There's Laurence (Nathalie Richard), a peer at his law firm, whom Alain recently got pregnant and reckons he should marry; Christophe, the frisky, gay younger brother of another ex-girlfriend; the obsessed, incarcerated, but sexy client, Marc; and Marc's entrancing hairdresser girlfriend, Babette. "The only person he has yet to charm is himself," Duran Cohen has remarked.

Can Alain make honey by the end? Or just leave behind a lot of empty flowers? A film of dichotomies, confusions, mistakes and desires, Duran Cohen's hysterical, chaotic feature makes ordering from a menu seem like a breeze. ???A QUESTION MARK OF A MAN????

(1) Poor Alain......what a strange man. He is damaged goods, and perhaps that's why we are shown several scenes of his mother: The Queen of Damaged Goods. Alain can sometimes show passion with someone, but he can't be constant with someone.....he can't be monogamous. What a question mark of a human being! (2) But it is not only Alain who needs our pity: Poor Christophe!! Alain is the opposite of what this young man needs (remember, if you will, what C's father says that he needs). Cyrille Thouvenin does a very good job with the Christophe role, but he is able to do oh-so-much more in that greater gay-themed French production: "JUST A QUESTION OF LOVE." (Thouvenin's performance, alone, makes this review's 3rd Star) (3) PS: Alain's life is not just one of Confusion; it is one of utter chaos.

charming, sexy, witty and wise

This delicious little concoction is an imaginative and romantic cinematic pastry from France. It is fast-paced, with a enchanting cast, great story, and a witty, satyrical, decidedly Gallic slant on life. Pascal Greggory is perfect as Alain, the confused, seductive, fortyish lawyer who loves self-doubting Laurence, his law partner (pregnant with his child) as well as beautiful and determined Christoph, the younger brother of a former lover. Their ambidextrous loves scenes are hedonistic, hilarious, and delightful. This erotic stew (to mix my culinary metaphors) is made even more tasty by the addition of a few other spices: Alain's beautiful, doomed client, Marc, and his erstwhile girlfriend. A multi-faceted gem which stands up to multiple viewings and gives much whimsy and satisfaction. Alain finds that he can indeed, as Christoph promises, have it all.

Not Confusion But Disfunction

The best thing about this film is the photography and good-looking cast. The story drags from the very beginning and never gets anywhere. By the time it ends, I wanted everyone except Christopher to be put into the French prison that was shown. That prison, by the way, shows stark differences from what we see of American prisons, as in Oz!
