Review

Cold Showers revolves around Mickael (Johan Libéreau), a star on his judo team whose family life is a wreck. His father is a hopeless drunk to the point of comedy (a major liability, as he is a taxi driver) and their finances are so upended that they have to turn their electricity off for weeks at a time. Nonetheless, Mickael perseveres with a good-natured seriousness that serves him well in his athletic pursuits. He is seemingly mature beyond his years and enjoys a highly sexed relationship with his handsome girlfriend, Vanessa. Things take a turn when the wealthy father of his new teammate asks Mickael to be his son’s personal trainer. Their friendship grows over time and comes to include Vanessa until one day it boils over into a spontaneous sexual encounter that leaves the three of them trying to sort out their emotional wounds. The feature film-debut of documentarian Antony Cordier, Cold Showers goes beyond mere explorations of teen sexuality with a keen eye to the socio-economic influences on its budding young characters. Why must the French have a virtual monolopy on films that explore that part of our human behavior system, as we evolve or try to grow into adults? Cordier has given the film world a very precise insight into such a microcosm such as this. He literally leads the audience through a series of incidents which not only are entertaining but totally educational. This is one film for your Collection. This film shouldn be seen by all parents of teenage children!! A STORY OF EMOTION WITH A MISSION OF EDUCATION!!!

I wish I had read the reviews before I ordered this one (they may not have been there before I added it to my Wishlist). The keywords give it away--no gay content whatsoever. Not a bad film overall, but not a great film. But I order from TLA for the GAY movies; the rest I can easily get elsewhere. They should do everyone a favor and remove this from the GAY section. It's off to the local used DVD store to see how much I can get for this one on trade-in.

I am quite surprised at how many of these films show up in the gay section. I suppose that films like this do not earn much from the distributor, so by listing it as gay, they assure their VAGUE DESCRIPTIONS will entice us into buying it.

I was disappointed and kept asking my sig/other when the gay stuff was going to start. It never did. To quote a great american idiot: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice....you won't get fooled again..."

It is a good film

I disagree with the previous reviewers; "Cold Showers" is a good film, it just isn't a gay film. I, too, was expecting a gay film, since TLA includes it in its gay section. I assumed the "life altering sexual encounter" referred to in the synopsis was a gay one. It was not. However, that does not change the fact the Antony Cordier created a very good film on the explorations of adolescence, and provides a commentary on the tension and conflicts between the rich and the poor. I also found the director's interview in the DVD extras to be illuminating.
