Let's boogie!!!
Although the production date is listed as 1980, this disco camp-fest is rooted in the Qiana, figural, nylon shirt '70s. Featuring the "acting" and singing talents (?) of the Village People along with Valerie Perrine, Steve Guttenberg and Bruce Jenner on roller skates, this comedy is "groovy".

The story is inane, the acting atrocious and the musical numbers ridiculous, but we love this movie! There is a highly-sexed rendition of "YMCA" set in the locker room and so many unintentional laughs that we don't want to give away.

And yes, the director is the "quicker-picker-upper" lady herself:
Rhoda's Nancy Walker in her only directorial effort.
(Gee...what a surprise.)

“Can’t Stop the Music” is a pseudo-autobiography of The Village People. Jack Morell is a struggling composer who is desperate for fame. What he really needs is someone to sing them. Samantha, his roommate and Ron, a lawyer help him to form a group of six guys from Greenwich Village and the movie captures their rise to fame.
This is not a movie to be taken seriously by any means. There is not much plot, much characterization—not much of anything but the music of The Village People. You don’t have to think or wonder or worry, you just have to sit back and have a good time. When the move came out in 1980 it was not considered as campy as it is today. The whole thing is silly but not offensive in any way.
In this film everyone smiles all of the time. I wonder if they were smiling because either they had nothing to say or that they realized what they had to say was so mundane. The movie is funny for many different reasons but not because it was meant to be so.
I have read reviews condemning the film and to those people I say, “Ease Up”. This movie doesn’t have a thing to say but to take us away from the rough side of life and given us an hour and a half of pure fun. So what if it doesn’t have a message—it doesn’t need to.

This movie has it all wrong and that makes it RIGHT! The music, sexual undertones, naked guys in a gym locker room! Bad story, chessy acting and a Hoot to watch! It's the last stop off for us gay guys before aids and Ronnie messed us all up...Get it NOW!

How do YOU remember the 70's?

I was so thrilled to see this on DVD that I bought it the week it came out. (Insert 'of the closet' joke here.) I think that, with the exception of Steve Guttenberg and Valerie Perrine, "Can't Stop The Music" pretty much ended the careers of all involved. The Village People were effectively derailed by this movie, Bruce Jenner was never given another acting role, Alan Carr gave up on musicals (unless you count "Grease 2"), and Nancy Walker folded up her Director Chair for keeps. What you DO get is some hilarious homo-erotic dance numbers and one good concert sequence with the Village People and The Richie Family.
Otherwise, you're forced to endure acting that seems to be given one direction (SMILE AND LOOK GIDDY!), dialog filtered through corn syrup, editing by blowtorch, and Jenner in cut-offs with a half shirt. "Can't Stop The Music" was everything about big budget 70's musicals gone completely over the hay-wire top; a train wreck of a culture clash worthy of a five feathered golden turkey.

"Can't Stop The Music's" extras include a pretty good photo gallery and notations. A must for collectors of B-Grade films and for seventies nostalgists.
