I don’t think any of us knew what to expect from “Brothers and Sisters” but I soon realized that this was a show that was not only worth watching but that it is one of the best things on television. The cast is absolutely amazing and we truly can believe that the Walker family is really made up of brothers and sisters. The series has earned its place as we watch a group of actors portray a family with its ups and downs.
We have a large cast of quite complex characters who manage to remain individuals and I found some of the acting to be amazingly good. “Brothers and Sisters” is one of the finest TV dramas to come along in several years and I look forward to Sunday nights with the Walkers. I recently bought the first season on DVD just so I could have the family with me all of the time. The show takes us through the entire gamut of emotions once a week (or all in one sitting if you watch the DVDs) and the mixtures of the family dynamic with intrigue is just wonderful. The way the show manages to incorporate politics into this family-oriented show is wonderful. The death of the father in the first episode sets the tome for the series. The mother (the incredible Sally Field) and the adult children have to figure out how to pick up the pieces of their lives and here the demise of the family gives us an idea of what to expect.
There is a gay storyline involving one of the brothers, Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and his friend, Scotty (Luke MacFarlane) is exceptionally good and well handled. We, for once, have an in-depth and complete relationship between two men which is dealt with in a mature and intelligent way as appears to me, at least, one the best gay storylines that I have ever seen on the television screen.
