This 64-page book contains only the short story. We recommend "Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay" sold in our "Other Products of Interest" area on the left sidebar. It's got not only the short story but the screenplay, essays and photographs.
Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, "Brokeback Mountain" is her masterpiece.
Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they're working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer.
Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because that's what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.
The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of "Brokeback Mountain," and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world's violent intolerance.

Breathtakingly and luxuriously simple prose

I do not like westerns and lived in North Dakota long enough to have no fascination whatsoever with the high plains. But this story drew me into its web of passion, hope, conflict and ultimate tragedy. I am also glad I read the book before seeing the movie (which is outstanding, by the way). Having read the book helped me understand the nuances of the movie. This is a must read!
One of the BEST Short Stories

I read this story after seeing "The Shipping News" years ago. I liked the movie so I went and bought some of her books. I liked a few but loved "Brokeback Mountain". It is an amazing story told over 25 years about two people who find out that love is not always enough. At times I forgot this love story was about two men. A Must read, even if you are going to see the film which I pray is as good.

When I first read the short story, "Brokeback Mountain," it was the last
story in Anne Proulx's "Close Range, Wyoming Stories". She saved the
best for the last!
This is a love story in the truest sense of the word. Forget the gender
of the lovers, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist.
This is Love! With all the joys and aches. and pain in the ass problems,
that makes its the one true human emotion that sets us apart from
the rest of God's creatures.
I'm a 6'2' ex- Marine, and I found myself in tears after reading this
gut wrenching tale of love, seperation and finally lost. It is the lost that
hurts so much.
Please read the book and go see the film. I saw previews of it.
Ang Lee does Ms. Proulx's story proud.
