Synopsis

Matt Riddlehoover scores with Bookends, his second feature. Capturing the casual conversational tone of Hannah and Her Sisters Riddlehoover sucks you into his deceptively cheerful birthday party story. No, this isn’t just another gay Big Chill re-tread. The inevitable melt-down isn’t tragic like in The New Twenty and the company isn’t banal like Whirlpool. No, Matt Riddlehoover is onto something, he’s a filmmaker to watch out for. While it's far from a perfect film, Bookends is a real change from most of micro-budget junk that passes for film these days.

It’s Donnie’s birthday and all the geeks from French club have gathered for their annual reunion. It’s at Russell’s (Riddlehoover) place, he’s gay and it’s a nice apartment, so that‘s where they smoke pot and order Chinese food. Brett’s (Jonas Brandon) down from New York, where’s he’s dipping regularly into the pool of available one-night stand women, but he holds a torch for Gayle (Lindsay Hancock) who’s marrying Travis (Sam William). So that’s the set-up. There’s a boyfriend drama for Russell, and there’s a lesbian with a great sense of humor (stay tuned during the credits for a great Paula Abdul joke).

Not a whole lot happens in this one-hour drama, that starts out as a comedy, but it’s got some insight, and there’s real heart here. It took us until the final credits rolled till we got that the filmmaker worships Woody Allen, we can’t think of a better filmmaker to put on the altar when you want to explore the psyche. We’re kinda eager to see where Matt takes us next.

The writer new why he called this movie bookends. because the story was just filler to put the bookends together. the studio was right it look every bit like it was made because the dir. writer wanted to see themself in a movie. CAN YOU SAY FAILED.next time why not just get on the web. you know jonas and matt ( i want my money back) better yet i want my 70 min of my life back. i could had spent better on the toliet wipeing my butt. if this was in book form i would had use the pages to do it.

I have already written about Matt Riddlehoover in another of my reviews but just let me say here that this film, “Bookends”, confirms what I have already said. Riddlehoover is a new talent to watch (and he’s pretty cute to look at as well). “Bookends” will remind you of one of those evenings you have had when you got together with a group of friends whom you haven’t seen in a while (or you have seen them but under different circumstances). In this film eight friends in their twenties get together to celebrate a birthday and as the evening passes, we learn a lot about the participants as we watch relationships become tested, hearts breaks and passions kindled anew.
This is a very, very dark comedy and the laughter that comes is in a way a release from the goings-on on the screen. What I found especially interesting is that some of the cast members also appear in another of Riddlehoover’s film but here they are completely different. I found myself siding with several of them at different times in the film. The actors are so completely natural that I felt that I could have been watching this very same thing happen right in my own living room and although I have never had such a total experience, memories flooded back to me of a very similar evening. It is impossible for the viewer to not see himself in one of the roles and the film, by and large, won me over from the opening shot.
