With a seamless blending of fiction and documentary, he tells the story of Bob Mizer, the pioneering founder of the Athletic Model Guild (AMG), a company which produced still photographs (for muscle mags like “Adonis” and “Tomorrow’s Man”) and short films, all of which extolled the beauty and chiseled physiques of men. Chaste by today’s standards, AMG's photos and films were homoerotic images of “the boy next door” filmed against the now campy backdrop of Roman gladiators, prisoners, bikers and bodybuilders. The fiction story follows photographer and enterprising businessman Mizer (Daniel MacIvor), who teamed up with his mother to film his beefy star-wannabes around his sun-drenched pool. It is here that Neil, a naïve, right-off-the-bus teen is lured into using his handsome looks to become a model. The wide-eyed Neil soon learns about the world of sex, prostitution, love and sex. But a police raid and ensuing criminal trial soon threaten both of the men’s worlds. Interspersed with the story are rare archival footage and interviews with former co-workers (including Joe Dallesandro), customers and models who joyfully recount this early era of gay erotica. Humorous, sexy and poetic – an unforgettable homage of the 1950s world of gay erotica and the repressive world which surrounded it.

This movie is wonderful and not just because of the eye candy(which there is plenty of), but because of the wonderful acting, fascinating interviews and the overall storytelling. I really didn't know what to expect when I put this Dvd in but boy was I pleased. This film had me from frame one to the last. Be sure to watch this movie you won't be disappointed.

Countless people will watch this DVD just for the...well, beefcake. And they'll find an abundance of that. But Beefcake is surprisingly funny. It also provides an interesting study into human desire, as well as attempts to destroy those desires, or disguise them as something else.

Beefcake is not just some porn in disguise

I saw this at the 1999 film festival (my God, has it really been that long?) and I was thoroughly surprised. I hadn't heard much buzz regarding the film, but I recognized Fitzgerald's name. So I decided to check it out. While the film does border on pornography at times (and admittedly, these are the least successful scenes in the film), it is a campy and cheerful look at a time when muscle magazines were not really for the info inside, but just for closeted gay men oogling the photos. While I have not seen the film since the screening at Sundance (which had two incredibly buff, scantily clad men outside in the foyer--admittedly my favorite experience at a screening), I would be interested to see how it turned out. The special effects hadn't been finished (blue screen was very obvious), but overall, I must say I was impressed by the film's maturity surrouding the subject matter.
