Prominent Hong Kong filmmaker Scud has had two films that received worldwide festival play and commercial success in Asia (Permanent Residence in 2009 and City Without Baseball in 2008), yet neither has been available on DVD in the US... until now!

What are the hallmarks of a Scud film? First: there are gorgeous young men - more often than not in the nude (showcasing the Bruce Weber-like beauty of his male leads). There are also stylish Hong Kong locationss, elaborately designed sets, impressive cinematography and unpredictable stories that double as sexy explorations of what it is to be queer in Asia today.

Mainland China-born, Scud began his career in IT, started his own company, moved to Australia, and then returned to Hong Kong in 2005 to begin a new chapter in his life: as a filmmaker.

Amphetamine tells of the erotic, troubled, intense and, at times, violent relationship between a young straight man (the stunning Byron Pang) and a wealthy Euro-Asian (Thomas Price). Kafka (Pang) is a swimming and martial arts instructor who works to take care of his ailing mother - and to feed his drug addiction. Stuck in an unsatisfying relationship with a woman, he falls for the openly gay Daniel (Price). The two become passionate lovers. But will their cultural, financial and sexual differences - and Kafka’s haunted past and present drug addition - be too much for them to overcome?

Set amidst Hong Kong’s beauty and wealth, in a spectacular high rise apartment, this tortured gay love story is infused with striking cinematography and unexpectedly thrilling fantasy sequences.

This new film that is directed by Scud, a man who regards himself as China’s queerest filmmaker “you’ve never heard of” but you are hearing about him here. “Amphetamine” is the story of a straight swimming instructor (Byron Pang) who falls in love with a rich businessman (Thomas Price) but it is not so clear about what happens as there are drugs and bad memories to deal with.
Scud has the luck of having exceptionally good looking men in his films (of which this is the first available in the U.S.) who spend a lot of time naked before the camera and his Hong Kong locations and sets are beautiful. I just got this film and am amazed at its beauty. The story deals with being gay in today’s Asian world.
The story is intense and erotic and at times violent. Kafka (Pang) is incredibly good looking and is supposedly straight who is a poor swimming and martial arts teacher who takes care of his ill mother and works to feed his drug addiction. He has a girlfriend but the relationship does not satisfy him and he falls for Daniel, the businessman who is openly gay. Passion is ignited between the two but they are both culturally and sexually different and Kafka’s past works against them. The action takes place in a luxurious Hong Kong apartment and the beautiful cinematography shows a thrilling story. This is one not to be missed.
