Synopsis

Inspired by a true story, Amnesia tells the story of a young man (Dusan Dukic) who wakes up on a Montreal street knowing nothing about himself, except that he's gay. Amnesia is superb storytelling from a seasoned gay French Canadian director, Denis Langlois (Danny in the Sky, The Escort).

A young man wakes up naked on a pallet on the street in Montreal. Who is he, what is his name? How did he get here? The only thing he seems to remember is that he's gay. And so begins one of the most compelling gay-themed mysteries we’ve seen. Based on a true story, this young man has been through some trauma that caused his memory loss -- or is he an imposter avoiding the law in some way? Filmmaker Denis Langlois (The Escort, Danny in the Sky) keeps us on the edge of our seats and guessing throughout this amazing tale. Under truth serum he comes to the conclusion that his name is James Brighton and that he's from Morristown, NJ. A local gay group has a volunteer come forward to house him. As time goes on he develops his own gay family in Montreal, still holding out hope that he’ll remember who he is. After appearing on a "Real News" show, his family contacts him -- or are they truly his family? Opening up doors of memory, consciousness and morality, Amnesia is truly a remarkable film. “Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma” is a movie based on true events. A young amnesiac awakens in Montreal not knowing anything about himself except that he is gay which turns out to be the central theme of the movie. We do not know what happened to him before he was found naked on the street but we learn that eventually says his name is James Brighton. Then begins a search for his identity which is really interesting because no one has reported him missing. He is taken in by a gay support group who help him to find out who he really is...is he truly James Brighton or has the stolen the identity of someone else. Is he really suffering from amnesia and who is the real James Brighton?
It is a fascinating story in which sensitivity and other philosophical questions about the nature of identity are dealt with. We look at the idea of what happens when a person suddenly loses his identity and the rewards and risks of regaining it and the ways the loss affects relationships with others and with oneself.
There is a great deal about this movie to like and the film successfully puts emphasis on the mystery of James Brighton and how and why he lost his memory and with it his identity. “Amnesia” manages to avoid the clichés and psychological nonsense that usually are found in movies of this sort. The film concentrates on the difficulty of attempting to unravel a mystery like this and thereby hold’s interest. What is missing is successful transition which left me confused and several characters that could have used a little more development. These characters also come and go at breakneck speed so we never really get to know them. Even with that I found the music compelling.

Langlois has directed what must be considered one of the most definitive yet emotional works on the conflict of being gay. While based on a true story, certain artistic liberties are taken with the actual story line. This only enhances the overall complexity of the film. This is a must-see-film! A word of warning: There Is Some Very Graphic Violence Depicted! A definite addition to your Gay Cinema Collection! TOTALLY MESMERIZING!!!
