Synopsis

On a Berlin summer day, a chance encounter brings together two young men whose lives are in shambles. Alex is coping with a broken heart after his deadbeat boyfriend cheats on him; Leo is a media professional who can no longer hide the truth from his demanding, long-term girlfriend: he’s been attracted to men all the while. So begins a summer of love and self-discovery for Alex and Leo. Review

In this German comedy, Alex and Leo, that features six characters in search of love, director Ives-Yuri Garate and screenwriter/star André Schneider bring a light touch to a hip urban tale. Alex (André Schneider) walks in on his boyfriend fucking someone else – and out he goes – much to the relief of his friends Tobi (Udo Lutz) and Steffi Graf (Sascia Haj) (and yes, the character not only has the unusual name of a famous tennis star, she’s also a gossiping astrological therapist).

Delicious German porn star/actor Marcel Schlutt stars as Leo, who, after a dinner party, reveals to his girlfriend that he’s got sexual feelings for men and it’s best that they break up. Six weeks later they all have a wild night at a Berlin performance art club. Leo goes out with his friend, who happens to be a patient of Steffi’s and Alex goes out with his friends. Tobi is smitten with a gorgeous waiter, but he loses the power of speech whenever he sees the man. On a wondrous night, Alex meets Leo, and Tobi discovers his waiter (and they go home together). But what about Steffi?

Alex and Leo vibrates with the energy of the hip Kreutzberg, Berlin streets and clubs where it was filmed.

Fun escapist romp

This movie neither reinvents gay romance nor teaches the deep secrets of ancient masters. But it does what a good movie should do - it entertains. Marcel Schlutt does as well with his clothes on here as he does with his clothes off for CazzoFilms. I hope he doesn't suffer the "porn stigma" that faces actors in the US and that he's allowed to expand his career into other films and roles.

I love it when everything works in a film and that is so true of “Alex and Leo”, a German film about gay friends. Alex (Andre Schneider) comes home to find his partner deep inside someone else and ends their relationship on the spot. His friends rejoice now that he has unloaded the dead weight in his life. Steffi (Sasca Hai) tries to comfort him but in the process Alex notices a new face, Leo (porn star Marcel Schlutt) that seems to be particularly interested in him. At first Alex is not sure how to react to the obvious interest but he succumbs to Leo’s good looks and personality (which is interesting because Schlutt is one lousy actor).
The movie, while not perfect, beguiles the viewer and pulls him in quickly. There are problems, however. The plot is no great shakes and is totally predictable. The dialogue, however, is brilliant and written by actor Schneider. The acting comes in two extremes—very good and very bad. Udo Lutz as Tobi steals every scene that he is in. His timing is perfect. He is flawless as the bitchy gay male (and all of us know someone like him).
Another plus is the German men who are great eye candy and the direction is also excellent. This is a movie that requires nothing from the viewer except to sit back and enjoy and we do not get enough films like that.
