Afternoon Pleasures: Erotica for Gay Couples, edited by Shane Allison, will pretty much provide readers with what the title promises. The stories in this anthology are mostly about male couples who still live together, but two or three deal with the aftermath of bad breakups (“Queen Intrigue” being one.) Although the partners may still love each other they sometimes need to spice things up by trying open relationships and new titillations, as in the comic story “Brand-New Dance.” In “One Afternoon in the Bible Belt” two husbears borrow another bear’s submissive young cub for an afternoon of bondage pleasure. A second bondage tale is “Something Different,” which it certainly turns out to be. Also something different and amusingly kinky is “Public Displays of Affection,” in which a couple finds a most unusual way of satisfying their cravings. “Tom’s Feet” is exactly what it promises to be, a fervent fetish that centers on a handsome policeman’s odiferous size twelve extremities. In one of the longer stories, “Line of Sight,” a young gay psychic finds love (or at least lust) by reading the colored auras of the hot men around him. Although a few of the stories consist mainly of a string of sex acts and have little plot, most are reasonably well-written. Shane Allison’s own story “Sandwich Artist” is one of the best.
