This skittish, edgy indie gem takes you down an obscure path with unexpected turnings. The film is artfully constructed, the story offered in glimpses, random segments that the viewer pieces together, the perceived reality changing with each additional datum. Bill (Theobald), a young man lacking purpose and identity, breaks into empty apartments after randomly stalking the occupants, whom he analyzes on the basis of their possessions. He tells himself he's conducting research for a nonexistent writing career. A seemingly chance encounter with a practicing burglar takes him to another level of invasion; as people instill their personae into physical objects, taking these things away shows them what they had, what they took for granted. This pseudo-philosophical justification for their incursions propels their activities to greater risk and daring, sending Bill down the rabbit hole to a place where nothing is as it seems. Following is most satisfying, an intelligent and beautifully orchestrated film; a low-budget triumph.
