Review

This audacious first solo-directed feature film from Quentin Lee (Flow, Shopping for Fangs) tells the tale of a love triangle with three possibilities. Ryan, a young Asian-American screenwriter/waiter has been in a relationship with Joel for three years. Although there's lots of love between the two guys, Ryan feels that he isn't understood. At a party they meet Leo, a cute young thing, and all sorts of ideas pass through Ryan's head. That night Ryan tells Joel he is going to take a break from their relationship and stay with his college friend Carrie. Ryan packs his knapsack in the morning and we are presented with three different versions of what happens next in this experimental, yet very accessible drama.

Do Ryan and Leo hook up? Do Ryan and Joel reunite? Or do they part amicably? These possibilities and more are broached. Without any full frontal nudity, there's plenty of hot sex between these three adorable guys and a few others as well. The film was shot on high-resolution video with beautiful style and verve. Quentin Lee has given us an enjoyable, challenging and sexy film.

Experiment Drift

Lee has directed what has to be considered to be a film of ground breaking potential! The very uniqueness of its composition makes it a very likely candidate. The director has shown shown some very sensitive yet ground-breaking areaof gay love and its pursuit there of. This is definitely one film that should be on the Classic Gay Film Collection. THE PURSUIT OF LOVE NEVER ENDS!!!

I really loved the story and how Quentin Lee developed the scenes in which there are that many and more possibilities in life. The way the characters Ryan and Joel interacted with oneoanther was very refreshing. Thanks Q. Lee for giving us a vision of life and love that sometimes we don't want to face. But in the end we have to have love in our lives.

So here's a nice, little indie film made on a shoestring budget with no monstrous, gaping flaws. That alone sets it above most other nice, little indie films made on a shoestring budget.
Ironically, though, what "Drift" seems to lack the most is a sense of bite... one of the things that the tortured intellectuals of the film note about their lives.
The film is basically a more complex, less commercialized take on the Gwynneth Paltrow vehicle, "Sliding Doors." In this incarnation, gay Ryan has gotten the 3-year itch now that his relationship with lover, Joel, has gotten comfortable. He meets eager young writer-wannabe Leo, and begins to question his "marriage". This is all justified nicely as we see the artistic, passionate Ryan trying, but failing, to connect with Joel on a more enlightened plain.
This is when "Drift" shows us three possibilities of where Ryan's life may take him: off with Leo, back to Joel, and none of the above.
While the film never lost my interest, it is, at its core, a talkfest. Yes, it's a heckuva lot deeper than "Sliding Doors" will ever be, but it's also less fun and far less charismatic. And I found myself waiting for some sort of big emotional confrontation that never really showed up.
Alas, quiet and thoughtful is more what the film aspires to be... and really, there's nothing wrong with that. It just won't make your heart race.
One final positive: gay men and their sexual relations are handled both realistically AND erotically. The film manages to be neither disinfected of sex nor a pointless bump-and-grindathon like, say, most of the second season of "Queer as Folk."
