Review

Murphy proves he can talk to the animals in this very funny and entertaining family comedy based on the 1967 Rex Harrison musical. As with his successful The Nutty Professor, Murphy has updated a '60s semi-classic to produce a laugh-laden hit which stands on its own. Eddie plays Dr. Dolittle, a talented physician who much to his regret, learns he has the ability to understand animals -- all animals. Unlike Harrison's Dolittle, Murphy's doc is not happy about his gift, and it wreaks havoc with family and business associates. Though some of the family segments border on the sentimental, the humor is much more broad and cutting. As would be expected, the animals are the attraction here, and they are wonderfully brought to life. Director Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie) has once again created a winning comedy for the whole family.
