Synopsis

Donnie Darko is an edgy, psychological thriller about a suburban teen coming face–to–face with his dark destiny. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a delusional high–school student visited by a demonic rabbit with eerie visions of the past—and deadly predictions for the future.

Review

Owing a passing debt to David Lynch and Paul Thomas Anderson, director Kelly makes an impressively hypnotic debut with this (perhaps too) ambitious indie sci–fi thriller. Gyllenhaal plays the title character, a doubly troubled teen circa 1988 who's disaffected and schizophrenic. His dreams are haunted by a demonic rabbit named Frank, who gives Donnie apocalyptic prophecies and spurs him to do delinquent (and sometimes, arguably beneficial) deeds like vandalism and arson. Still, he manages to find a kindred spirit in Gretchen (Malone), a girl new to the community and just as alienated as Donnie. But what does Frank have in store for him? Kelly ratches the suspense by slowing things down, using long fluid takes (that utilize the full widescreen frame) and changing film speeds; the effect is mesmerizing. This otherwise remarkable effort is marred only by a protracted ending that not only makes little sense but also contradicts much of the science that came before it.

This was a great Movie and this is the only review I am going to write. This movie is a disturbing look at a young mans view of the world sought with wild scenery and amazing charactor placement. I urge everyone to see it, otherwise you may never know about the Giant Rabbit. :-)
