Portman plays Novalee, a young, pregnant trailer-park girl from Tennessee who is left behind by her no-account boyfriend. Finding refuge in a Wal-Mart, she hides and lives there by night until she delivers what the media calls "the Wal-Mart baby." Her brief notoriety introduces her to a series of quirky characters. There are too many "big" moments crammed together to produce any real dramatic flow, and the characters are of the "wear-their-emotions-on-their-sleeves" variety. Much of this will leave you with eyes rolling.
