Craven wrote and directed this inventive movie within a dream within a movie that turns on the interesting premise that the power of the cult following of the previous six Nightmare films has served to bring Freddy Krueger to life in the real world. Langenkamp plays herself as a modern career actress whose son is being plagued by Freddy-style nightmares. When her husband and two friends are killed, she turns to fellow actors Englund and Saxon and then Craven for guidance. Scary nightmare sequences, a good script and an even more menacing Freddy are put to good use, but for all this Craven cannot restore the series' original luster, and the "is it a dream, movie or real" hijinx inspire a feeling of déjà vu rather than one of dread.
