Review

Film biopics, especially those devoted to portraying modern entertainers, have certain inherent flaws that — to a certain extent — are unavoidable. It is almost expected that disbelief will have to be suspended or that the viewer will be arriving to the theater with enough background on the movie’s subject to fill in the gaps themselves. Runtime constraints along with the absence of factual insights make certain these shortcomings will remain. The genre is getting better, though. In 2004, the spirit of Ray Charles entered and consumed Jamie Foxx in the film Rayand, though Foxx did not sing his own parts, the world was given a naked, warts-and-all insight into one of the world’s most cherished and adored entertainers — one who had only recently passed away. Sharing many similarities, this year’s Walk the Line — a film primarily devoted to the almost folklore-ish love between Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) and his 2nd wife, June Carter (Reese Witherspoon) — again paints a vulnerable and unflinching portrait of one of the brightest jewels in the crown that is American music.

Based on Cash’s two autobiographies as well as significant insights offered by Johnny and June themselves, Walk the Line’s story starts when the “Man in Black” is less imposingly known as a 12-year-old kid named JR. The following 10 years pass quickly: the tragic loss of his older brother, his time in the military, his marriage to first wife Vivian, the birth of their two children, his time as a door-to-door salesman, and finally that fateful meeting with Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, after which JR. becomes Johnny, and a legend is born. During a circuit tour with other Sun musicians (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, etc.) he is introduced to the two things that will shape the rest of his life: June Carter and amphetamines. It is the 10 years that follow — the years where the spark from Johnny and June’s first meeting will slowly unfold into the monolithic passion they were famous for; the years where Cash’s rampant abuse of speed will quickly dismantle his family with wife Vivian and practically his career; the years where an almost mythological character of modern-day Americana named simply, “The Man in Black” will be born — that Walk the Line truly flourishes, and finds its voice .

Much has been made of the fact that Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of their own singing. By the end of the film, you can’t help but think that not enough has or could be said really, because even though neither ever sound exactly like their characters did (though freakishly, they’re not that far off, either), the attitude and devotion to their roles represents the Cash's better than anything else could. Simply, it’s brimming with grit. A fitting tribute to Johnny and June by far, and — when its minor (necessary) shortcomings are forgiven — a very enjoyable trip.
