Sporting his customary take-control but nice-guy gruffness, Jones plays a civil supervisor who's ready to rally the troops when L.A. is devastated by a volcano. Aided by geologist Heche, the two race against time in their attempt to outwit this force of nature and save the city. All the trappings of the disaster film are here: the scientist to whom no one listens; various stereotypes coming together; children in peril; and the by-now annoying "saving of the dog." But Volcano has going for it an appealing ensemble, a quick pace, good effects, and a story line which won't require you to smack your head (too often) in disbelief. Despite a heavy-handed racial angle and a terribly clichéd ending, Volcano is fun to watch as it speeds down Wilshire Boulevard and levels Los Angeles -- any film which does that can't be all bad.
