The director of Speed and the writer of Jurassic Park unite to bring one grand-slam if vacuous special effects extravaganza. De Bont employs the high-energy octane of his exciting bus saga with Park's great F/X, and when the film allows these F/X to take center stage, Twister is a knockout. But there's the matter of a story between the effects, and it's a whirlwind of mediocrity. The agreeable Hunt plays a scientist who chases tornadoes. Onto the scene comes her soon-to-be ex-husband (Paxton). He was once a tornado chaser but now he's a weatherman. The two get together and follow several tornadoes throughout the Midwest. But forget about the dialogue and story -- the F/X are the real interest here, and each successive twister brings on more carnage and jaw-dropping effects culminating in a smash finale.
