The Farrelly brothers take comic absurdity to new, hilarious heights. Their humor may be over-the-top at times, and some of the film lags between jokes, but there's no denying that there's something about this comedy which is flat-out hysterical. Stiller is wonderfully droll as Ted, a nerdy high schooler whose prom date with his dream girl, Mary (the bewitchingly beautiful Diaz), results in disaster. Thirteen years later, he's still obsessed with her. He hires Pat (Dillon), a smarmy detective, to track her down. This sets the stage for uproarious cases of mistaken identity, double cross, impersonation, animal cruelty, human cruelty, masturbation jokes, gay jokes, handicapped jokes and the old fishhook-caught-in-the-mouth gag. There's obviously nothing sacred to the Farrelly brothers, but their un-PC, juvenile toilet humor and burlesque bits work. They already know what's funny; they just need to sharpen their narrative skills to create the great comedy of which they're capable.
