If you're not already conversant with the mythology of the popular sci-fi TV series, this film version nevertheless stands on its own as a marvelously crafted evocation of conspiracy theory and mistrust of government; simultaneously, it is a perfect keystone for the TV series. Events which transpired in prehistory are uncovered in present-day Texas, initiating a new phase of a cover-up of unimaginable proportions. A building with government offices is demolished in an apparent act of terrorism. The bodies of three firemen and a small boy are discovered; but did they die in the blast? Agents Mulder (Duchovny) and Scully (Anderson), part of an FBI team sent in by a warning phone call, barely escape the massive destruction. The swiftly paced story line unfolds without stinting on personal elements of characterization.
