Review

Set in 1930s Thailand, a pregnant village girl named Nualjan traverses the countryside on her way to Bangkok in search of her boyfriend, Chob. Her journey leads her to take temporary refuge in a dilapidated boardinghouse owned by the mysterious, rich widow, Madame Ranjuan. The estate harbors an assortment of odd inhabitants, including a grandmotherly type who plays with a doll, a wise-cracking housemaid who warns of a flesh-eater and the stern, strict manager who constantly reminds Nualjan to mind her own business. As the curious country girl begins to explore her surroundings, she discovers Madame Ranjuan’s nightly ritual of cohabitating with a mysterious, ghostly pale man. What other secrets are the lodgers hiding? And is Nualjan brave enough to venture deeper into discovering what lies beneath the surface of her surroundings? Director Wisit Sasanatieng adapts well to the genre to deliver a bone-chilling, suspenseful film steeped in Thai folklore. With tight close-ups, expert use of sound effects and exquisite attention to period details, The Unseeable offers a refreshingly old-fashioned brand of Asian horror. (Thai with English subtitles)
