In this fourth installment of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series, logic and history crash head-on with pyrotechnics and narrative, making for a slickly made thriller that is never quite as involving as it should have been. Taking over the role created on-screen by Alec Baldwin and made popular by Harrison Ford, Affleck, in a "gee-whiz, I'm-a-spy" portrayal, is Jack Ryan, a CIA operative who finds himself -- besides much younger than his previous screen incarnations -- embroiled in Cold War-style intrigue when three Russian scientists go missing. It all leads up to scheming Nazis, a stolen nuclear bomb and a detonation that in the wake of 9/11 is disturbing but plausible. Director Robinson maintains tense pacing throughout, and has crafted some exceptional scenes of political machinations, but much is lost by the underplaying of Affleck. More of a prequel than sequel, the film traces Ryan's humble beginnings -- but Affleck never offers any glimpse of the cerebral man-of-action that is to come. There should have been at least a trace, but Affleck barely waivers from his smug, frat-boy overachiever. His presence is a distraction, and diminishes an otherwise extremely competent, often gripping thriller that, because of its miscast star, plays like "A Hardy Boy joins the CIA."
