An underprivileged but brilliant ivy-leaguer (Jackson) is given the opportunity to join an elite, secret campus society -- The Skulls -- which would afford him untold power and wealth. But he must follow the rules, or else. Ridiculous beyond belief, The Skulls unravels immediately following a decent setup that promises a minor but suspenseful little thriller. Instead, The Skulls feels like nothing so much as a lackluster "Dawson's Creek" episode (with that teenybopper show's lightweight Jackson as the lead, to boot); there is no suspense, no drama (the acting is remarkably bad across the board), and absolutely zero paranoia, which is the raison d'être of these movies. Stunningly inept, to be sure, but The Skulls is "blessed" with the worst dialogue of the year and actually has a terrific (and wholly unintentional) comic build which culminates in a hysterically overwrought ending. The best bad film of the year. You would think that joining an underground college organization called the Skulls would be a good, safe way to get ahead in this Ivy League school. But for outsider Jackson, getting accepted can come at a price.
