Review

A creepily effective chiller, The Mothman Prophecies is well-directed by Pellington (Arlington Road), and features solid performances by Gere, Linney and Patton. Journalist Gere, recently widowed, investigates sightings of a large, moth-like creature in a small West Virginia town -- a creature his wife claims to have seen just before her death. There's very little action per se, and special effects buffs will be disappointed by the mere glimpses of the monster, but fans of suggestive horror should eat this one up. Pellington sets up an atmosphere of unease that hardly lets up, with many eerie moments along the way, punctuated by an impressive score by tomandandy.
