Review

The Coens continue their slash and burn through film history with this moody and sly black-and-white film noir. Thornton gives a crafty performance as Ed, a barber who, if not for his constant plumes of cigarette smoke, would hardly be noticed as he slinks quietly through life. His wife (McDormand) is a ball of fire, working her way up through the Nerdlinger's department store empire with the adulterous help of boss Big Dave (Gandolfini). In typical noir fashion, Ed finds himself knee-deep in circumstances beyond his control, a murderous web of murder and mistaken identity. But this is the Coen brothers after all, so there's plenty of humor present, often at the expense of their expansive palette of dimwitted characters. Jenkins is a particular standout, among a terrific cast, as the local lawyer who drinks just a little too much. Roger Deakins' cinematography is the only truly reverent apsect of the film, invoking a moodiness that clashes knowingly with the winkingly improbable story. But please, for once, could the Coens write a character who's as smart as they are?
