This overlong swashbuckler has very little swash to it, no thanks to Wallace's sluggish, unimaginative direction (this is his feature debut). The setting is 1660, and all but one of the infamous Musketeers are retired. The one remaining Musketeer serves the cruel and arrogant young snit of a king, Louis XIV (DiCaprio), who's intent on letting his people starve to death. DiCaprio also plays Louis' secret twin, Philippe, who's been imprisoned in the Bastille and hidden in an iron mask to conceal his identity. To save their nation, the Musketeers (Irons, Malkovich, Depardieu, Byrne) reunite for a daring plot to kidnap the king and replace him with his mysterious twin. The prestigious foursome is a joy to behold, but there's little else to recommend. Instead of injecting his pivotal character with any semblance of regal pomposity, DiCaprio plays Louis XIV as a spoiled trust-fund brat. And for a film set in so many picturesque locations, the cinematography is downright gloomy.
